The Idler Magazine has long been the reading material of choice for those who want to improve their intellect without doing much hard work at all. Its West London HQ, The Idler Academy, is a bookstore, school and café – complete with a tranquil, hidden Medieval garden – run by chief idlers, Tom Hodgkinson and Victoria Hull. The academy offers online and real-world courses in the classical liberal arts and practical skills. Check in for Monmouth coffee and homemade cake, read books and attend a class on such subjects as punctuation, floral design, ukelele, public speaking, ancient philosophy and the art of singing. There are also plenty of workshops for kids. Online courses are available to those who cannot get to the venue. StyleCard holders get 30% off all online courses; these can be booked via The Idler’s website. Consider it a school for cool.
